Summary
XXVIII (213-221) — Lily awakes early and works in her garden. In the early morning light, she revisits her memory of being in the hotel room with Eva, right after Eva had returned from her nine-month stint with Jerome. Eva was paranoid and could not be left alone. She slept, bathed, and ate, but did little else. Lily feared Eva was suicidal. Eva looked emaciated and expressed the behavior of a trauma victim. The more time the two girls spent in the hotel room, the more Eva opened up. Jerome had said and done horrible things—he had convinced Eva that her parents were evil and manipulative, and that Ugo and Maria only moved into the community for the money.
