Summary
XX (151-158) — Lily jolted awake one night to the smell of smoke. Eva sat up too, and the girls fled the bedroom and saw Helena outside of her bedroom. The three women ran downstairs and found Heloise standing in the library, lighting the curtains on fire. A pile of burning books sat before her. Eva, Lily and Evan grab water from the kitchen and scrambled to put out the fire. Ugo grabbed a garden house from outside and jolted the water through the window. Soon the fire was extinguished.
Evan and Helena turned their rage toward Heloise, asking what was wrong with her and why did she start a fire. Heloise’s only response was to point at Eva and Jerome: “I saw you, and I saw you,” she said to them (153). Heloise’s accusation that Eva and Jerome...
