Summary

This section begins with the protagonist walking through the waterfront with her daughter at night. Somebody called her attention because the protagonist had dropped the baby’s shoe. After the protagonist picked up the shoe, she continued walking. The same voice warned her that the water was nearby, so the protagonist was in danger of falling. The protagonist ignored this and continued, but she was grabbed from behind. When the protagonist turned around, she saw Liu Kanghi for the first time.

The protagonist immediately “trusted” (68) him. Liu Kanghi led the protagonist to one of his friends’ house, where his acquaintances and family resided.
