The dogs rush around in chaos, seeing the barn collapse, Trudy on the ground, and Glen screaming blindly. Essay then rounds up as many of the other dogs and puppies as are willing to follow her, and leads them away from everything they have ever known.
The Sawtelle Dogs Analysis
The loyalty of the dogs, especially Essay, toward Edgar continues unabated in the final chapter of the book. The dogs have measured their lives by the presence of Edgar in them. But without Edgar, the dogs set out across the fields with the intention of leaving behind everything they have known.
