Essence Summary

Edgar, Gar, Trudy, and Claude seem to be getting along relatively well in late October. Edgar's puppies are now four months old and he is training them. As part of Claude's responsibilities, he begins looking after the next litter of puppies. Claude's careless style of training the dogs is the source of much contention between him and Gar. Arguments between the two become more frequent and more severe, despite Trudy's best attempts to calm them down. Gar teaches Edgar how to drive Alice, the tractor. He also disapproves of Claude cutting wood in the rain, trying to teach him how to do things properly. But Trudy is upset, believing that Gar needs to let Claude live his own life.

Edgar, watching the news, learns about Starchild Colony on the Canadian side of Lake Superior, run by Alexandra Honeywell, a beautiful woman.
