Chapter 8: Fighting Off the Sharks for a Fish Summary and Analysis
On the eighth day, the winds were gentle and the sea was tranquil. Scores of fish escorted Luis's raft as it it was guided along by the breeze. There was a resignation to Luis's attitude that had replaced fear and desperation. He tried to grab a fish but all he did was scare all of them away. He tried for hours to grab a fish but failed. He looked at his hand afterward and saw that the fish had been nibbling on his hands and drawing blood. Suddenly, the raft was surrounded by sharks. Was it the blood on his hands? He wasn't sure.
