Chapter 6: A Rescue Ship and an Island of Cannibals Summary and Analysis
On the third day lost at sea, nothing happened. The raft was being moved by the breeze. It was easy to lose a sense of direction since the raft was being tossed about so much and there was no point of reference - no front or back of the raft. He used his keys to mark the days, scratching each date on a the gunwale. He made the mistake of marking February 30th down instead of March 2nd. A few days later, he realized his mistake and was confused about what day it really was from then on. Whatever day it was, he lost all hope of being rescued. He still had not eaten or had any water.
