Summary
From far away in Pisa, Elena thinks often of Lila and wonders how the pregnancy is coming along. Finally, at Christmas, she hears from Carmen that Lila had a difficult birth that required surgery. It was a boy; after some dispute with Stefano, Lila names him Rino. Elena grows quiet, and Carmen accuses her of being a snob. Elena is home for Christmas and feels out of place. Her parents don't know how to talk to her and her friends no longer travel in a group. Everybody is fighting in some way or another. Elena manages to go for a walk with Enzo, who has studied his own way to an engineering degree. He says nothing the entire walk, until the last minute, when he tells her that Lila is a wonderful mother.
