Summary

Lila and Stefano drive to the hotel in which they are supposed to stay. They are both ill at ease. Lila almost feels as if she is seeing Stefano for the first time. When they reach the room, Stefano tries to smooth over their argument with a kind, easy manner, but Lila is unresponsive. They go to dinner, they walk around the city of Amalfi; Stefano talks constantly and Lila remains quiet. Eventually they return to the room. Lila's head is filled with displeased thoughts about her new husband, from his voice to his looks to his demeanor. He tries once more to convince her of why an alliance with the Solaras was necessary. Once back in their hotel room, they wrestle as Stefano attempts to make love to Lila; she is unwilling, and eventually he consummates their marriage by force, pinning her...
