Poonachi

Poonachi is the name given to the small goat that is gifted, at the beginning of the novel, to the old man by the mysterious giant. At this time, Poonachi is incredibly small even for a baby goat, and is notable for being so starkly black. The giant claims that she was the seventh to be born in a litter of goats, which is an incredibly large number of goats in a litter. This confluence of odd circumstances creates the effect that Poonachi is in some way destined for an unknown greatness.

As the novel progresses, the narrative focus shifts away from the perspective of the couple that owns Poonachi, and inside her own mind, which is colored with a rich interior monologue.
