Summary
Pages 29 – 33—Dinesh walks back through the jungle from the beach. On the way, he thinks about Ganga and remembers the first time he saw her. The only reason Dinesh noticed her was because there was already a crowd formed around her, watching her as she grieved the death of her mother and brother due to a recent air strike. Dinesh recalls that Mr. Somasundaram stood a few feet away from Ganga, watching in silence. Dinesh saw dignity in Ganga’s display of grief, and was impressed to see her volunteering at the clinic just a few days later.
Dinesh’s thoughts then shift to Mr. Somasundaram’s reaction to the death of his wife and son. True to Dinesh’s generalization in Chapter One, Mr. Somasundaram did not seem affected by their deaths for days after the event. Eventually, however, Mr. Somasundaram became listless...
