Summary

In Chapter 14, Hoa narrates the next chapter from the first person point of view, as a witness to what happens next in Nassun and Essun’s stories. Nassun tells her mother that her guardian needs her. Essun is unable to reconcile the cruel man she knew Schaffa to be with the man who is the only father that Nassun has ever known. Because they have grown so much apart, Essun feels there is no hope they will ever be able to trust each other or have a relationship with each other.

Nassun walks away from her mother, determined to help Schaffa. Wanting to get some kind of reaction out of her daughter, Essun shouts after her that she knows about Jija. This comment makes Nassun angry and she insists again that she has to help Schaffa. Essun offers to...
