Summary
In Chapter 3, the narration returns to the second person point of view. When Essun recovers well enough to walk on her own, she is disturbed because she feels as if she is going the wrong way. Tonkee talks to Essun, telling her that if she wants to go after Nassun she needs to wait until they are further west. She also encourages her to make up with Ykka. Tonkee argues that Ykka is more scared because of the position into which Essun has put the people than she is angry. Essun argues things would be worse if she had not interceded, that the people would have been killed by stone eaters or taken captive by the Rennanis.
