Summary

The next morning, after making reservations at another motel, the narrator goes into the city to see if she can get any new information at the Inter-Continental Hotel. Her spending of a great many cordobas gets her a lot of attention from hungry street people, but the disdain of the hotel doorman. She finds that some of the Englishman’s luggage was left behind, and that the manager does not care who claims it. The narrator takes it back to the motel, although she is tempted to steal it and run. When she gets back to the motel, she finds that the Englishman is in despair, and says that she is not surprised – “he was doomed” (81). They take the collected luggage, evade the Costa Rican, and make their way to their new motel.
