Summary
Chapter 19 begins just as the sun is rising. Dionne and Saranne are being driven up Bird Hill by a boy named Chad, the same boy who Dionne had met on the day of the church picnic. They drop Saranne off first, whose aunt Trixie restrains herself from reprimanding the girl until Chad and Dionne have left. Next Chad drops off Dionne at her grandmother’s house. He leans in for a kiss before she gets out of the car, but she stops him and slams the door behind her. Hyacinth is waiting for her at the door, and Dionne tells her they were at a party that went late the day before and they figured it was better to drive back in the morning. Hyacinth tells her she does not want to have to worry about her the same way she did...
