Summary
On the day of Avril’s funeral, all the people of the community gather in the cemetery for the burial of her body. Dionne, who up until this point has repressed all of her emotions surrounding her mother’s death in order to hold onto her anger and resentment towards Avril, finds herself no longer able to hold back her feelings. Wanting to be able to see Avril’s face one last time to tell her she cannot leave yet, that she cannot get off this easily, Dionne makes her way toward the open grave. The women try to hold her back, but the next thing she knows her feet are landing on the wreath placed atop Avril’s coffin.
The people drag Dionne out of the grave and the service resumes. Afterwards Hyacinth asks Dionne what came over her, and Dionne...
