Summary
When Chapter 6 begins the second session of Vacation Bible School has just started. This is distressing for Phaedra, who is picked on mercilessly by the other girls in her class. The one aspect of school she enjoys is memorizing Bible verses for a class competition, and she learns that she and her mother share a favorite verse: “No weapon formed against me shall prosper” (66). Dionne, on the other hand, sucks up any feelings of resentment she has toward the school. However, in spite of her growing lack of interest in Trevor, she is forced to see him almost every day at school. When he asks her why she does not make time for him anymore, she tells him it is because she is too busy with her friends, the older girls in Bird Hill who have recently taken an interest in her...
