Summary
In Chapter 18, Vincent Hogan, Billy Warner, and Mike Childress, three of the men who beat and robbed Nick were arrested and put in jail. Ray Booth, however, had run. Nick admired the sheriff for going after the men who had hurt Nick, as he promised.
Nick had dinner that night with Baker and his wife, June. June insisted that her husband go to bed to take care of his cold. She ordered him to deputize Nick so he could take care of the inmates.
The next morning, Dr. Soames examined both Nick and Baker. He was sneezing. He said the sickness was making the rounds in the town. Even though Baker claimed he felt better, Soames ordered him to go home and go to bed. That night, Nick dreamed of corn and something he was terribly afraid of.
