Mata Hari
Mata Hari is an independent woman in a time period when independent women are objects of suspicion. She and her lawyer both believe that she is being executed not because she was a spy but because she followed her dream and lived life on her terms.
Mata Hari tries to find happiness in the ways accepted by her community, getting married and having a family, but she does not enjoy being a wife and mother. Her husband is an abusive alcoholic and she is isolated at home in Indonesia. She thought being married to an officer in the Dutch army would result in an exciting life but instead, she is stuck in a country where she does not know the language and has no friends.
It is during a dance performance by the Javanese that Mata Hari develops her dream to be an Oriental dancer in Paris...
