Summary
Continuing in Chapter 15, Ascot led the pack toward the border. In a brief moment of Anxiety, he wondered if he properly closed the trunk. Stopping quickly to relieve himself, Ascot returned to the car to find it was closed the whole time. With Gordievsky in the back of Gee's car under a space blanket, they reached the perimeter of the border area. There were five separate barriers - three Soviet and two Finnish.
The first and second checkpoints proved to be no issue, but the third was the actual border crossing. Ascot went into deal with customs and immigration forms, while the ladies, the baby, and Gordievsky remained in the car.
