Once Emilio Sandoz's assignment with Sofia Mendes had been completed, he puts in a request to be sent home to La Perla, Puerto Rico. Although encouraged by Dalton Wesley Yarbrough D.W., a Texas native, to take a linguistics position, he has some unfinished business back home.

Once in La Perla, Sandoz encourages his friends Anne and George to join him there. Sandoz starts shaping up the mission, recruiting neighborhood kids, taking a special interest in one named Felipe Reyes. Anne opens a medical clinic and George tutors kids in math and technology.

Late one night Anne finds Sandoz in the clinic, injured, saying only that he had been beaten by his own brother. As Anne tends to his wounds she realizes her attraction for the...
