Sexism in the Workplace
Armas criticizes the issue of sexism in the workplace through the experiences of her protagonist, Lina. Lina’s main tormentor at InTech is Gerald. Gerald’s snide remarks regarding Lina’s gender and sexuality make her feel emotionally unsafe and create a hostile work environment for everyone.
Lina feels uncomfortable as soon as she is assigned the task of planning Open Day. When she tries to protest that she is unqualified for the job, Gerald tells her, “Sweetheart… think of it as a party. Women know about those, don’t they? Just prepare some activities, get some food delivered here, put on nice clothes, and crack some jokes. You are young and cute; you won’t even have to use your brain all that much.
