Point of View
The Spanish Love Deception is told entirely through first-person narration from Lina’s point of view. This is especially useful when it comes to understanding her feelings for Aaron since Lina has trouble communicating effectively with him. It also encourages the reader to empathize with the protagonist as they learn about the various traumas which shaped her behaviors.
Lina is an unreliable narrator because her hatred for Aaron clouds her judgement, making her believe that her enmity is reciprocated. This is apparent in Lina’s reaction to Aaron’s suggestion that he accompany her to Isa’s wedding: “He wouldn’t. Not because he couldn’t, but because what he was saying did not make any freaking sense. Not in our world” (8).
