Aaron Blackford and Lina Martín are colleagues at an engineering-consulting firm, InTech. They are also enemies. One morning, Aaron confuses Lina by offering to be her date to her sister Isa’s wedding in Spain. Lina’s best friend, Rosie, is delighted but Lina declines his offer.

When Aaron first came to InTech, Lina nearly ruined his first-ever presentation by spilling coffee everywhere. He was also cold when she presented him with a welcome gift: a mug with an engineering joke on it. Worst of all, Lina once overheard him tell their boss, Jeff, he would work with anyone but her. Lina hates Aaron, but Rosie senses Aaron is into Lina.

That same day, Lina gets assigned the task of planning Open Day: an all-day event for InTech’s prospective clients. Her sexist colleague, Gerald, implies that she is perfect for the role because she is a woman. Aaron spends that week helping Lina with the planning. She tries to refuse his help at first, but he insists.

Days pass and Lina still does not have a date. Worst of all, she lied to her family and said that she would be bringing her boyfriend. Lina said this because she feels her family worries that she has not moved on from her ex, Daniel. Daniel is the brother of the groom, Gonzalo.

Aaron walks in on Lina during a phone call with her mother. He hears his name. Lina called him her boyfriend. That evening, Aaron offers Lina a ride home because of the rain. He reminds her that he is her only hope to have a date. Aaron proposes they make a deal. He will come to the wedding if she attends a formal event the following night. Lina consents.

The next day, Lina sends Aaron a formal email requesting details about their event. Instead of replying, he shows up at her apartment. Lina is stunned by Aaron’s handsomeness in a tux. She puts on a gown, and they head to a fundraiser for animal shelters. Aaron got invited through his football contacts; he used to play in college.

There is a bachelor auction at the fundraiser. Aaron gets territorial when Aaron’s friend TJ suggests that Lina bid on him. Lina wins a date with Aaron. She is surprised when she notices him laugh during the fundraiser. Afterwards, Aaron asks her to dance. Lina feels electrified by his touch. She tells him they should be friends, then takes it back. Aaron gets offended.

Back at work, Jeff announces that Aaron is being promoted. This would make Aaron Lina’s future boss. She stops by Aaron’s office to tell them it would be inappropriate for them to carry through their deal. Aaron dismisses Lina’s concerns.

Two weeks later, Lina feints while at work. Aaron saves her. When she explains that she is not eating much in preparation for her sister’s wedding, Aaron seems disappointed in her. He calls her cute. Aaron takes Lina to a Mexican food truck for dinner, then drives her home. Lina realizes she is glad to have him as a wedding date.

Aaron runs into Lina at her favorite café that week. She tries to refuse his offer to pay for her drink. When he insists, she makes him buy everything on the menu. Aaron calls her out on her stubbornness.

When Aaron arrives late to pick her up for the airport, Lina worries he is not coming. He is disappointed that she doubts him. Aaron upgrades their seats to first-class. When they arrive, her family is delighted by his Spanish. The fake couple is put in a separate apartment. Lina shows Aaron to the room with a twin bed. He accidentally breaks it by lying down on it. Lina’s meddling cousin Charo walks in and assumes they broke the bed while having sex. Charo leaves to get the bed fixed, as she will be staying in the apartment with them. This forces Aaron and Lina to share a bedroom.

The wedding party gathers for the Wedding Cup: a competition between the men and women. Lina faces her ex, Daniel. She realizes she has no feelings for him. She is deeply attracted to Aaron, who plays soccer shirtless. He touches her throughout the day, like a real boyfriend.

The wedding party head to a bar, then a club. Lina gets drunk and nearly kisses Aaron when dancing with him. When she gets overwhelmed in the club, Aaron leaves with her and hands her some water. She asks him why he quit football. He explains that his father, a coach, put too much pressure on him. Once Aaron’s mom died, Aaron realized he no longer enjoyed playing.

As they get ready for bed that night, Aaron orders Lina to close her eyes. He kisses her neck and face. Aaron says he will only kiss Lina’s lips once she finally believes his feelings for her are real.

The next night at dinner, Lina’s father expresses his joy that Lina found Aaron. When she goes to the washroom, Daniel follows her. He tells Lina he doubts she is really happy. Furious, Lina tells him that her happiness is no longer his concern. She returns to Aaron, who ordered dessert for her.

That night, Lina tells Aaron about her messy breakup with Daniel. Daniel was her former professor. Her fellow students accused her of sleeping with him to get good grades. He dumped her once he started getting negative publicity. Aaron tells Lina she is a light in this world. She falls asleep in his arms.

Lina leaves early the next morning to get ready for the wedding. When they meet up afterwards, Aaron says she looks beautiful. There is a kiss cam at the wedding dinner. Lina and Aaron are both nervous it will land on them. Aaron leads Lina by the hand to the side of the restaurant. He waits until Lina admits their relationship is real before kissing her passionately. They have sex that night.

Aaron brings Lina back to their apartment when they land in New York. They have sex. When they get tacos, Lina thinks she sees someone from work. The next day, Gerald harasses her in the cafeteria. He accuses her of only sleeping with Aaron because he will soon be their boss. Aaron threatens to fire him. Lina flees.

Lina and Aaron go days without speaking. Sharon from HR summons her to encourage Lina to issue a formal complaint against Gerald. Lina is shocked to hear that her colleagues are on her side. She learns from Sharon that Aaron is in Seattle. Aaron’s father has cancer.

Lina shows up at the hospital in Seattle. Aaron is overjoyed to see her. She tells him she loves him and will never leave his side again. Aaron reconciles with his father.

One year later, Aaron and Lina are still together, though unmarried. They leave work early to head to Montauk, where Lina and Aaron’s family will meet them. When Lina tells Aaron she is nervous he tells her they can face anything together.
