Bhima
Bhima is an elderly woman who lives in the slums of Bombay with her granddaughter, Maya. Bhima had been married to a man named Gopal and had two children, Pooja (a girl) and Amit (a boy). Bhima comes from a long history of women who have worked as servants. She is illiterate, leaving her little choice. She perpetuated the situation by insisting that Pooja does not need an education. Instead, she convinced Gopal to pay for Amit’s education so that he could take care of Pooja later in life.
Bhima has ended up alone and raising her granddaughter Maya. Gopal left Bhima after he was injured in an accident that left him without a job.
