Summary
Sera worries about leaving Bhima alone because she looks so tired and defeated. Sera reflects that she looks even more downtrodden than she did when Gopal left her. She believes Maya has broken Bhima’s spirit. Yet, Sera cannot feel angry at Maya because she remembers her as the young child that Bhima took in and Sera won over with chocolates.
In the elevator, Sera sees her neighbor, Mrs. Madan. Mrs. Madan talks to Sera about her arthritis and says her servant knows what to do for her. She then goes on to remark on how Sera treats Bhima so well that Sera will surely get into heaven because of it. Sera says she treats Bhima well because she is a good person and worker. Mrs. Madan says she is softhearted, and the proof is in the way she goes to check...
