Hacienda Nápoles
Hacienda Nápoles is symbolic of the past. Antonio and Maya connect over their parallel experiences at the zoo, and visit it together again as adults. Now in shambles, the zoo represents the vestiges of Antonio's and Maya's irretrievable pasts.
Cassette
The cassette is symbolic of truth and understanding. Ricardo, Antonio, Consu, and Maya all listen to the cassette and hear the recording of the pilots talking before Elaine's plane crashed into the mountain. They hope that listening to it might clarify the mystery of the tragedy and offer them some kernel of truth. Ultimately, the cassette cannot grant them true understanding, but the tape immerses them in the often futile search for meaning and truth.
