Summary
In Chapter 5, “What’s There to Live For?,” Elaine spent three weeks in Bogotá and continued seeing Ricardo. They often attended political rallies and social events together. Then one night, Ricardo proposed and Elaine accepted. Ricardo’s family hosted a small ceremony at their house because they could not afford anything larger. Afterwards, Elaine confronted Ricardo about money, asking how they would support themselves. He told her not to worry.
Ricardo told Elaine he had a surprise for her. He blindfolded her and took her to an unknown location. He did not remove the blindfold until they were in a plane he had borrowed from a friend. He flew her to her next assignment in La Dorada. In flight, Elaine felt she was entering her new life.
