Summary

In Chapter 2, “Never One of My Dead,” after the shooting, Antonio was taken to San José Hospital, where he learned that the bullet went through his gut and lodged in his hip (49). He underwent surgery and emerged okay. Everyone told him he was lucky. Antonio still cannot remember the days surrounding the shooting, because of the anesthesia. He did not feel sad when he learned Ricardo had died but instead cursed him and hoped “he’d had a painful death” (50). Meanwhile, everyone kept asking why Ricardo had been killed.

Over time, Antonio began directing his hatred at his body and his pain instead of at Ricardo (51). He had to undergo therapy and the doctor indicated that he would experience loss of libido due to his injuries. Meanwhile, Aura grew bigger as their baby, Leticia, grew inside her (53).
