Summary
Chapter 45 is “Homecoming.” As soon as they return home, Gideon casts a blessing on Oswald “so that his soul will leave the tree and go to heaven” (285), which means the portal will no longer exist. It is a necessary step to keeping the Watchers at bay. Without Oswald to maintain the high temperature in the garden, the entire garden will die. Jacob apologizes, but Dr. Silva says the problems existed before Jacob's arrival, which is why she had the gate.
Lily explains that she learned she was a Horseman after her husband died and that she was trying to expand her skills in the months before her disappearance.
