Summary
In Chapter 23, Mabel’s days became a mix of despair and work as she tried to care for Jack, the house and the horse. Her only hope was to get him well enough that they could travel back home. One day George came to check on Jack. He brought with him Mason jars of moonshine. She told him as soon as Jack was better they would be leaving. Later that afternoon a wagon bringing Esther came to the homestead. Mabel cried into her friend’s shoulder. Esther brought Garrett with her along with supplies. She told Mabel they were moving in to help with Jack and the planting until the end of the season.
