Summary
In Chapter 1, Mabel had expected the silence in Alaska to be peaceful. She had hoped to get away from the sounds of children. She and Jack had a baby ten years before they’d come to Alaska. It was stillborn. She wished she had kissed the baby and found out if it was a girl or a boy even though it was born dead. Meanwhile in Alaska, it was November. Mabel feared the darkness of the coming winter. She tried to keep herself busy. Still she thought she couldn’t survive the winter.
