Part Three, Chapter I - VII Summary
In Chapter I of Part Three, Huguenau spends his first night on the front lines of the war between Germany and England and deserts. In Chapter II, he makes his way through the Belgian countryside with his friendly manner and learns to use parsonages to hide in while he travels. He neither wants to return to the work day world, nor to be a soldier. In Chapter III, Huguenau decides to set up business there in the town of Moselle. In Chapter IV, Ludwig Godicke is a bricklayer who is unearthed from a trench and thought to be dead, but is revived. Somehow, his soul recovers. As Chapter V begins, Huguenau writes out an advertisement in the local paper, offering to buy wine, and heads to the newspaper office to place the ad...
