Chapter 9 Summary
Eddie returns to baptism class and Tartar is surprised to see him. Tartar asks Eddie is the Cain story offended him and that's why he left. Eddie shakes his head no. Tarter goes on to explain that African Americans can still live a good life and get into heaven, but Eddie knows that Tarter thinks it is a separate haven. Eddie ponders why none of the other 70 Youth for Christ students have never stood up to Tarter on his beliefs. Eddie proceeds with acting to make tarter believe that Eddie is on Tarter's side. Tarter tells Eddie that he is going to have to speak so that he can testify prior to his baptism.
Tarter asks Eddie to stay after class. He tells Eddie that he wants to move up his baptism. Tarter also mentions that he wants Eddie to join the Youth...
