Part 1: Chapters 8-14 Summary
In Chapter 8, it is the first day of summer vacation and Lennon has locked herself in her bedroom where she can be alone with her grief. Lennon takes a rejection letter from Julliard out of her clarinet case. Bailey had always dreamed of studying acting at Julliard and the rejection must have been painful even though Bailey just shrugged it off. Now, Lennon throws the letter away. Then she calls Bailey's cellphone, listens to her recorded voice mail message, and leaves a message asking why she did not tell her that Toby had proposed. Then Lennon stares at a picture she recalls Bailey drawing the day their grandmother told them their absent mother was an explorer. The picture ironically depicts the entire family except for Bailey.
