Chapter 3 Pages 299-309 Summary
When Eli emerges from Warm's tent, he finds a group of Indians outside with Charlie. The Indians are searching their belongings for anything of value. The Indians leave with what they want, which is the gold. The following morning, Eli buries War. Eli reads Warm's notes but Eli can't understand anything because Warm's penmanship is so bad.
As Eli and Charlie leave the camp, Eli decides that he wants to be a leader—a leader to himself. They arrive in Mayfield three days later. Eli decides he is going to pay his mother a visit, if she is still live when they return home. when they arrive at the Mayfield Hotel, it is burned to the ground, which means the gold they've stowed is gone too.
