The story takes place in third century Britain, approximately the years 286-296, during the rule of Emperors Carausius and Emperor Allectus.

Rutupiae

Rutupiae is the site of a major Roman fort on the Southeast coast of Britain and was an important entry site to the country. It is here that Justin is assigned as junior surgeon and where he first meets Flavius.

Portus Adurni

Portus Adurni is the port city from which Flavius and Justin hope to sail to Gaul. However, they encounter Paulinus there who provides shelter for them and they ultimately decide to stay to help Paulinus in his work to help others trying to escape the wrath of Allectus. When Paulinus is murdered, Flavius and Justin decide to move their home base to Flavius' family's farm.
