Justin
Justin, whose full name is Tiberius Lucius Justinianus, serves as a surgeon in the Roman army. When he meets Flavius at Rutupiae they discover that they are distant cousins. Justin is not as outgoing as Flavius, letting Flavius speak first in most situations, possibly because Justin stutters and he is embarrassed by it. Justin also has a more reflective personality, observing nature more carefully and being more sentimental over the passing of time and the deaths of comrades. Justin is also afraid of small, dark enclosed spaces which he is forced to inhabit a couple of times in the story when the young men are in hiding. Justin appreciates symbols and stories, too, and is the one who is most interested when Anthonius talks about Christos from Judea.
