Summary
One day when Flavius, Justin and Evicatos of the Sword are out hunting, Evicatos shows them an altar built into a rough stony ledge. Justin clears away some lichen on the stone and reads the words carved there: "To the Fates, Sylvanus Varus, standard-bearer of the fifth Tungrian Cohort with the Second Augustan Legion, raised this altar, that they may be kind." Flavius and Justin realize that the words must have been carved when the Romans were last in the area about 150 years ago. Evicatos wanted them to see this altar but also wanted to talk to them where he is sure that no one will overhear him.
