Summary
A young Roman man named Justin stands on the galley of a ship as it approaches the Roman fortress of Rutupiae on the southeast British coast in the third century. Justin has come from Rome, having been assigned to the fortress as a surgeon. Before he left for Britain, Justin learned that the emperor Carasusius had been a favorite leader of emperor Maximian but fell out of favor when Carasusius stopped some looting Sea Wolves from leaving Gaul with stolen goods but did not send any of the goods back to Rome. Maximian had ordered Carasusius to be executed but he got away to Britain and took the whole Roman fleet with him.
