Theo Faber
Theo is one of the narrators and the voice that is most prevalent throughout the novel. While he is initially presented as the protagonist, his actions both around Gabriel’s murder and after the reveal show him to be more of an anti-hero or even antagonist. Theo’s complicated nature is an important part of the novel as the reader is never really sure how to feel about him. Theo himself recognizes the suffering he caused for Alicia, her family, and his wife Kathy. A part of him accepts the guilt, but another part of him is trying to shift the blame to someone else. While trying to reveal Gabriel’s infidelity, he thinks of himself as a hero who only failed because he was unaware of Alicia’s history of mental instability.
