Summary
Chapter 21 begins with Agamemnon, Nestor, and Odysseus arguing about their need to present Achilles with a reward that inspires his return to battle. The men agree that Odysseus and Ajax will offer Achilles treasure, stallions, and women from Lesbos in addition to Briseis but no apology. Agamemnon advises that Briseis accompany his embassy to the negotiations and “show [Achilles] what he’s been missing” (146). As Briseis departs for Achilles’ compound amongst Agamemnon’s heralds, Ritsa adorns her with a white veil and Odysseus presents Briseis with an opal necklace that belonged to her mother. Upon arrival, Odysseus and Ajax deliberate with Achilles while Briseis waits outside on the steps as instructed.
