Importance: By establishing Arlo’s disability, this quote shows how poorly the guardians in his life treat him. Brother Birch continues to treat Arlo like a child, insulting his struggles while simultaneously keeping Arlo from the supplies and services that would help. Brother Birch is also subtly putting the blame on Arlo himself for not being better or working hard enough. This explains Arlo’s struggles with independence and constant thoughts of not being good enough for both his Guardians and their God.
It was never an interpreter’s place to make a decision for the Deaf. Our job is to interpret the message well enough so that the Deaf can make decisions for themselves.
