Cyril Brewster
Cyril Brewster is one of the two narrators, with his sections being told in the first-person perspective. As a dedicated American Sign Language (ASL) interpreter, Cyril is passionate about helping the Deaf and DeafBlind live their lives as independently as possible. However, he is initially terrified of his own failings, especially with the emotion and dedication required for Tactile interpreting (which is vital for the DeafBlind). After he takes the job as Arlo’s interpreter, however, Cyril becomes more comfortable with the process. He is even willing to try Protactile interpreting after learning from a DeafBlind woman named Tabitha. By the end of the novel, however, Molly’s false accusations and Brother Birch’s vindictive lies leaves Cyril’s status as an interpreter uncertain.
