Summary

Part III begins with Jaxie reflecting in the narration on the day that everything at the shepherd’s hut changed. During his months there, the wind had reliably come from the east. On this day, the weather was unusual, and the wind came from the north. Jaxie realized he could hear the sound of a generator nearby. He told Fintan about it. Although Fintan tried to downplay the seriousness of what Jaxie was saying, both of them were concerned about the noise. Jaxie resolved to walk north to investigate.

Jaxie hiked north and discovered shipping containers buried underground and attached to a generator. He decided to dig up the hatch to one of them and look inside, having convinced himself there might be women and children trapped in them.
