Chapter 9: Richard Summary
In the summer of 1943, Penelope feels as though the war will continue forever. She daydreams that Ambrose will send her a post that says he has fallen in love with someone else and is leaving her, but that note never arrives. Nancy is no longer a baby and Doris's boys have grown up. A man named Ernie helps the family as much as possible, coming through in a pinch when they cannot find meat or something else necessary to get by. The women, meanwhile, use anything in their surroundings to sew new clothes.
