Chapter 9: Sophie Summary
Ambrose comes to visit Penelope in Carn Cottage in Porthkerris for the weekend, but the entire visit is a disaster. Now she knows that her relationship with Ambrose is a total mistake and failure. She gives birth to Nancy, who is named after a suggestion by Dolly Keeling, and feels no love for the child from the start. She allows Doris to fawn all over her and admits to her mother that marrying Ambrose was a huge mistake and that she should have listened to her one piece of advice. Doris, meanwhile, receives word that her husband is dead. She is confused as to where to go and what to do until Sophie tells her that she is a huge part of their family now and would prefer that they stay with them permanently at Carn Cottage.
