Chapter 8: Ambrose Summary
Penelope goes to sleep that night and recalls how she met her husband, Ambrose. After volunteering for the war, she is assigned to the Wrens. As she has little skill and qualifications deemed important by war officials, she is given a low-grade title as Steward and told how to wear her hair and dress. For Penelope, with her bohemian lifestyle and free-minded parents, this is an entirely new way of seeing the world and living. She is instantly depressed and questions why she volunteered to begin with.
One night as she is walking to back to the Wrennery, a car pulls up behind her. The man offers to give her a ride, which she accepts. She is up front in telling him that she hates the job and he asks her out on a date for that evening. He waits outside...
