Fish

The fish are symbols of the Trawler’s perversion both in the vandalism of the Griffin statue and in the murders of Katherine and Matt.

Flashlight

The flashlight is a symbol of wrongdoing and threat. Bret sees this flashlight beam for the first time in the courtyard when he drives to Buckley the night before school will start for the year. The next day it is discovered that the statue in the school’s courtyard was vandalized. Later, when Bret visits Palm Springs to spy on Robert and Susan, he is traumatized when someone comes to the house after Bret confronted Susan in the restaurant. This person shined the flashlight in the windows of Bret’s aunt’s house where he was staying, as if the person was looking for Bret.
