Summary
In Chapter 1, the narrator, Bret Easton Ellis, went to Windover Stables with his friends Thom Wright and Susan Reynolds to see Deborah “Debbie” Schaffer’s new horse, Spirit. It was the Sunday before Labor Day in 1981. Bret admits he felt forced to go see the horse because he and Debbie had started dating in the summer. He felt the need to keep up appearances. Bret says this trip was significant because it led into the evening when he learned there would be a new student, Robert Mallory, that fall.
